To alter tone curves, select a channel and then use your mouse to click-and-drag the desired part of the curve. (Grayscale images: only the RGB channel is available.)  As you alter a tone curve, its new coordinates are conveniently displayed.  When you're done, the adjusted image is shown in the software's display area.
