Auto and manual focusing modes

High-performance 9-point AF system for outstanding wide-area coverage

The MAXXUM 7D’s high-performance AF system offers exceptional accuracy, with 9 separate AF sensors for wide-area coverage that gives you great flexibility in how you frame your subject. To exercise even more control, you can use the focus area selector switch on the back of the camera to choose any of the nine sensors as a spot-focusing target — the selected focus point will be indicated by a red mark superimposed on the image in the viewfinder.

Outstanding speed, plus the ability to accurately focus on moving subjects

High-speed AF data processing and lens drive systems assure instantaneous focus response, so you can more consistently capture the “magic moments” that SLR photography is all about. In addition, the AF system offers multi-dimensional predictive autofocus with auto-tracking focus-point display. It uses powerful processing algorithms to calculate the speed and direction of moving subjects in four directions, and significantly improves focusing accuracy during high-speed action photography.

Auto and manual focusing modes for greater shooting versatility

Four focusing modes assure optimum performance in a wide range of situations. There’s an AF-S mode for single-shot AF, an AF-C mode for continuous AF, and an AF-A mode that automatically switches from single-shot to continuous AF when it detects that your subject is moving. In addition, the MAXXUM 7D features the same AF/MF controls featured on the MAXXUM 7. Conveniently positioned for easy operation with the right thumb, the AF/MF button allows you to instantly toggle between autofocusing and manual focusing — without interrupting the flow of distance information to the camera’s metering, Anti-Shake, and ADI flash systems. Another focusing option that is particularly useful for macro and portrait photography is Direct Manual Focus. When the shutter release is pressed halfway in this mode, the focusing mechanism's internal clutch is released as soon as the AF system locks onto the subject, allowing you to manually rotate the focusing ring to fine-tune the image. Combining the convenience of AF with the enhanced creative control of MF, it lets you enjoy the benefits of both without switching focus modes.

Optimum exposure control

Optimum exposure control for beautiful images in difficult lighting conditions

Three metering systems

14-segment honeycomb-pattern metering

The MAXXUM 7D gives you a choice of 14-segment honeycomb-pattern metering, center-weighted metering, and spot metering modes. The 14-segment honeycomb pattern metering is particularly versatile, and employs new metering algorithms to ensure beautiful results in extremely high-contrast or backlit situations. Exposure compensation can be set in 1/3- or 1/2-step increments, offering even finer control.

Versatile exposure modes

In addition to aperture-priority, shutter-priority and manual exposure modes, the MAXXUM 7D features three programmed AE modes that analyze a wide range of shooting data to achieve optimum results. P mode offers full-auto shooting ease, while the PA and PS modes combine the convenience of programmed AE with the enhanced creative control of aperture-priority and shutter-priority shooting.

Advanced Distance Integration (ADI) for intelligent flash photography

Advanced Distance Integration is available with any MAXXUM D-Series lens. By comparing information obtained from the lens’ built-in distance encoder with pre-flash metering data, ADI calculates the optimum exposure settings and flash brightness needed to obtain a beautiful image — even if your subject is standing in front of a very dark, light, or reflective background.

Built-in flash or remote flash — you get great performance either way

The MAXXUM 7D supports full-featured flash photography with the built-in flash and external flash units such as the MAXXUM Flash 5600HS(D) and 3600HS(D), allowing you to take advantage of wireless high-speed and TTL flash, rear-curtain flash synchronization, bounce flash and advanced offcamera setups for pro-level flash shooting.

White balance control

Advanced white balance control with color temperature settings

New direct color temperature settings provide wide-ranging, professional-level white balance control. Settable in 100K increments over a range that extends from 2,500K to 9,900K, they offer exceptionally fine control when shooting under complex lighting conditions. There are also 6 fine-tunable presets, 3 user-definable custom settings, and an auto mode.

Continuous shooting

High-capacity buffer memory for high-resolution continuous shooting

At the high resolutions offered by the MAXXUM 7D, a massive amount of image data is recorded for each frame. Ordinarily, such large quantities of data reduce the speed at which a camera can shoot continuously, because the image data from the preceding shot must be processed before the next shot can be taken. The MAXXUM 7D solves this problem by using a high-capacity buffer memory and more efficient image processing. As a result, you can shoot up to 15 frames* at a high-speed rate of 3 frames per second, and be assured of capturing that “special moment” that makes a truly great photo.

*
Up to 15 frames in JPEG Large-Fine format; up to 9 frames in RAW or RAW + JPEG format.
